5 Common Types of Mold in Homes

Mold is a common problem in many properties and can pose serious health risks if not addressed immediately or managed correctly. Understanding the mold types that grow in homes can help with effective prevention and remediation. Here are five common types of mold you might encounter:

Aspergillus
This mold species is prevalent in indoor environments, particularly in places with high humidity. Aspergillus can be found in food, building materials, and dust. While many Aspergillus species are harmless, some can produce harmful mycotoxins that negatively affect the respiratory system and those with weakened immune systems.

Cladosporium
Cladosporium is a common allergen that can be found on damp surfaces such as walls, fabrics, and carpets. You can easily identify it when you see molds in shades of green or black, usually thriving indoors and outdoors. Being exposed to this mold can lead to allergic reactions, respiratory issues, and even asthma exacerbations.

Penicillium
Well-known for its blue or green appearance, Penicillium is frequently found on water-damaged materials, such as wood and wallpaper. While some species are used to produce antibiotics, there are other species that can be allergenic. Prolonged exposure to Penicillium may result in breathing difficulties and other allergic reactions.

Stachybotrys (Black Mold)
Stachybotrys, also referred to as “black mold”, is notorious for its potential health risks. It grows in environments with excessive moisture and is commonly found in spaces affected by water damage. Inhaling or touching black mold spores can lead to skin irritation, respiratory issues, and other serious health problems.

Alternaria
Alternaria is a mold commonly found indoors and outdoors, particularly during damp or rainy weather. It is often present in soil and plant debris but can invade indoor spaces. Alternaria can trigger allergic reactions and is known to contribute to asthma symptoms.
